DOLGEVILLE — The following are the events for the annual violet festival scheduled for June 8 through 10.
∫ House decorating contest: An anonymous donor has donated $500 toward the house decorating contest. There will be four awards. The prizes are as follows: $225, first place; $125, second place; $100, third place; $50, fourth place. The stipulation is as follows: The first and second place winners only, can’t have received awards for the same categories in the past — the first place winner wouldn’t be eligible to win an award if that same contestant won first prize at any time in the past. The same would be true of the second place winner. However, a first place winner could be a second place winner and vice versa. The third and fourth place winners would have no restrictions on winning based upon prior awards, according to a news release.
Keep with the festival theme, “Violets Still Blooming After 20 Years” or keep with the color theme of purples and pinks, the news release stated.
Businesses are also encouraged to decorate, the news release stated.
The applications are available at local stores. The judging will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. June 6, the news release stated.
∫ A flower show will be held from noon to 4 p.m. June 9, and from noon to 3 p.m. June 10, at the Dolgeville Masonic Temple, Main Street, the news release stated.
There are two divisions of exhibits, design and horticulture. The design division requires advance registration by June 1. Those interested can call Cathy Hearn at (315) 429-9497 or Nancy Strobel at (315) 429-9002.
This show is open to the public to display their horticulture specimens and their design abilities. There is no charge to enter a display, the news release stated.
A best in show plaque will be awarded for the best horticulture display. The horticulture specimens are flower and foliage cuttings from one’s own garden and potted houseplants, the news release stated.
In keeping with the violet theme, the public is invited to bring their violets to be displayed during the flower show. This is a community exhibit, the news release stated.
All entries and display violets will be received at the Masonic Temple from 3 to 5 p.m. June 8. All entries must be picked up by 4 p.m. June 10, the news release stated.
∫ The Violet Festival pooch pageant will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10. A proof of rabies is required, the news release stated.
The $10 registration fee enters one’s dog in the small, medium, or large size category. Other categories are available for an additional $5 each — puppy, senior, rescue and costume categories, the news release stated.
There will be trophies for first, second, and third place in each division; and a cash prize for Best in Show; first place winners in each category are eligible for best in show, the news release stated.
Those interested can enter as many categories that their dog qualifies for, the news release stated.
The returning judges: Joanne Johnson of the Herkimer County Humane Society and Bill Kardas, chief meteorologist, and also Katrina Smith, both of WKTV, the news release stated.
All proceeds benefit the HCHS, the news release stated.

∫ Poetry contest: To help promote and to continue local literary efforts, the Violet Festival will again offer a $100 cash prize for the first place winners in both adult and student categories, the news release stated.
The poetry contest is open to all. The poems are limited to 25 lines and must follow this year’s theme: “Violets Still Blooming After 20 Years,” the news release stated.
The application forms are available at the Dolgeville-Manheim Public Library, where the entries can be returned or mailed to: “Contest” P.O. Box 181, Dolgeville, N.Y. 13329, the news release stated.
