Adirondack Bridge Club has meeting
JOHNSTOWN — The Adirondack Bridge Club played the Mitchell Movement Aug. 5 at the at the Shirley J. Luck Senior Center, 109 E. Main St.
The north-south winners for first place, Arlene Comstock and John Chrisman; second place, Ann Masala and Betty Ringanese; third place, Doris McIntosh and Poppy Kiernan.
The east-west winners for first place, Mary Jo Schwed and John Quinn; second place, Sue Herrick and Tom Farnan; third place, Sue Best and Gretchen Haight.
Bannertown 50 Plus Seniors met July 31
MAYFIELD — The Bannertown 50 Plus Seniors opened their meeting on July 31, with their 11 a.m. social hour and luncheon.
The luncheon opened with Evie Leach, chaplain, reading the devotion, “God’s faith in us.”
President Carl Edwards lead the group in the Pledge of Allegiance and then introduced a representive from the Fulton County Recycling, who spoke on types of waste that should be going to the landfill for recycling and what goes into the garbage. She explained why and what is done with all of the recycling products. She had brought new bags that will need to be used next year when the new, no plastic bags law, will start.
Nancy Hayes, vice president, read the roll call.
Ann Mallin, sunshine chairman, was absent but had sent out one get well card.
Both Lorrie Valk, secretary and Joan Bezio, treasurer, gave their reports and were accepted.
The cookie committee for the next meeting on Aug. 14, will be Nila Edwards and Hayes. Trivia will be played.
Bezio brought up the idea of bringing in some canned goods with kids in mind, for the food pantry. Everyone was in favor. The meeting adjourned and the drawings for the door prize and the 50-50 were won by Leo Van Allen.
Anyone interested can come visit the group every other Wednesday starting at 11 a.m. The next meeting is Aug. 14.
Varoga Lake Bridge Club meeting held
CAROGA LAKE — The Caroga Lake Bridge Club played the Howell Movement Thursday at Caroga Town Hall.
The winners were first place, Mary Jo Schwed and Dottie Studenic; second place, John Chrisman and Carol Brookins; third place, Carlene Lankton and Carol Persse.
Class of ’46 holds alumni banquet
FONDA — D. Dorine Dimond, president of the class of 1946, of Fonda High School, welcomed 34 alumni and guests to the 34th alumni banquet July 28, at the Winners Circle. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Celia Case Furbur gave the innovation, followed by a moment of silence for deceased alumni.
The roll call of classes was read by Florence Coons Guiffre. The earliest class represented was 1946 attended by Lois Lotridge Collins, D. Dorine Oliver Dimond, James Friers and Edith Murdock Thompson, celebrating their 73rd anniversary. The 1949 class was celebrating their 70th anniversary was attended by Violet Dake Fallone, Virginia Disperito Healey and Alphonso Mancini. The class of 1954 was celebrating their 65th anniversary was represented by Many Manley DeSantis, Furbur, David Gibson and Joyce Davis Gray.
The scholarship award report was given by D. Dorine Dimond who introduced the scholarship winners. Jonathan Flander, accompanied by parents, Kimberly and Tom Flander, will be attending Herkimer County Community College for criminal justice and cyber security. Alphonso D. Mancini, attended with parents, Deborah and Tom Mancini and grandparents, Joyce and Alphonso Mancini. He will be attending Hartwick College to study nursing. The other winners not able to attend were Cassey Knolton whose letter was read to the alumni. She will be attending Utica College for health studies and is the daughter of William Knowlton. Jillian Wilder, daughter of Kelly Ford Wilder, letter to the alumni was read and stated she will be attending Sage College to study physical education.
A list of alumni donating to the scholarship fund was read. The dinner ended with the attendees singing the alma mater. The next reunion will be July 24, 2020.
Glen-Mohawk Seniors meet
FONDA — The Glen-Mohawk Seniors regular weekly meeting of Aug. 6, was called to order by President Joe Mancini at 10:30 a.m. The opening prayer was given by Chaplain Allan Taylor. The Pledge of Allegiance was followed with the group singing “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” with Barbara Furman at the piano. The roll call was taken by Vice President Gloria Kimball showing 31 members and one guest present. The reports were read and accepted. Phyllis Smith, sunshine secretary, said the August HealthLink calendar arrived. She read a thank you note from Dan Patterson.
There are 21 participating in a trip to Chatham’s MacHaydn Theatre on Aug. 22, with dinner at Yianni’s Restaurant. Lu Wilmot is taking reservations for the Oct. 9, Dutch Apple cruise on the Hudson River. Following the 90 minute boat ride with sightseeing and many things to look at through one’s own binoculars, those participating will have a meal at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant.
Kimball gave a reminder for the defensive driver classes being offered at the Shirley J. Luck Senior Center in Johnstown. They have two one-day classes, scheduled for Aug. 14, and Sept. 14. The American Association of Retired Persons members pay $20 and $25 for everyone else.
The food donations went to the Fonda-Fultonville Central School Backpack Program. The September donations will go to the food pantry.
A combined collection was taken today for the village of Fultonville Volunteer Fire Department and the town of Glen Volunteer Fire Department. A total of $101 was collected from those present. Each fire department will receive $51.
Kimball led in singing “Happy Birthday” to Beverly Guiffre.
D. Dorine Dimond spoke about a surprise recently, when she was honored by the Insurance Women of Fulton County for the 75 year membership in the organization. She was presented with a bouquet of orange roses and baby’s breath.
Mary Fox conducted the prize drawing with the help of Furman. The winners were Alan Taylor and Joan Daley.
The meeting adjourned. Alan Taylor gave the closing prayer.
Bingo was replaced today with table two’s lunch catered by the Hot Dog Hut. The center-left-right game, conducted by Alan Buck, following the meeting. The refreshment committee was Pat Putman-Chairman, Buck, Margaret Post, Gretha Russell, Betsy Saltsman, and Smith.
The next regular weekly meeting will be on Tuesday (Aug. 13) at the Fonda Reformed Church Hall. The doors open at 9 a.m. for socializing with refreshments. The meetings begin at 10:30 a.m. sharp. The Glen-Mohawk Seniors is open to all who have reached the age of 55 and older.
Seats available for Turning Stone trip
GLOVERSVILLE — The Ida L. McGinnis Club still has openings for the Turning Stone trip on Aug. 20. To reserve a seat, call Jeannie McDuffie at (518) 725-8396. The following trip will be Sept. 17. Call to reserve.
The club will start meetings on Sept. 10.
Cornhole tourney slated for Thursday
JOHNSTOWN — The Johnstown 50 Plus Club, located in the Shirley J. Luck Senior Center, 109 E. Main St., will hold a cornhole tournament at 1:15 p.m. Thursday. Cornhole is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing bean bags at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. A bag in the hole scores three points, while one on the board scores one point. Play continues until a team or player reaches or exceeds the score of 21 by means of cancellation scoring. Come join in the game and maybe take home a prize. There will also be free refreshments.

Nick Stoner Seniors meeting held Aug. 6
CAROGA LAKE — The Nick Stoner Seniors meeting was called to order by Grace Eglin at noon Aug. 6. “The Lord’s Prayer,” Pledge of Allegiance and Hello to your Neighbor was led by Eglin.
Marion Snell gave the secretary’s report and it was accepted as read. Shirley Holliday gave the treasure’s report and it was accepted as read.
Jean Griffin gave the hospitality report. The refreshment committee for the Aug. 20, meeting are Linda Saglimbini, Snell, Martha Mongato and Holliday.
Mary Lou Paterson gave the sunshine report. She sent out four birthday cards this month to Judy Elmendorf, Lorraine Bleyl, John Schwartz and Linda Stevens.
Holliday gave the membership report. All dues are in; there is three to be taken off the list.
The next trip is Sept. 10, the Raquette Lake cruise with lunch on the boat and visit Old Forge Hardware Store. The pickup will be at Johnstown McDonald’s at 7:30 a.m. and pickup at Caroga Town Hall at 8 a.m. The cutoff date is Sept. 3. $46 tip included for bus driver. Those interested do not have to be a member to attend. Anyone who wants to attend can call Eglin at (518) 762-2537.
In old business, Barbara Hought gave the report on the 80 plus luncheon on Sept. 17, she will be calling a few more places and report back on Aug. 20, meeting. A committee was chosen for the luncheon: Hought, Eglin, Paterson and Holliday.
Also Eglin has ordered the dictionaries for the third grade students at the Wheelerville Union Free School and they will be here this week.
In new business, the blind auction will be Aug. 20, meeting, Jeannine Schwartz will be the auctioneer and Hought and Kathy Powell will assist. Everyone was asked to bring something wrapped to be auctioned off. The club anniversary luncheon will be on Oct. 15, a committee will be picked at a later date.
Sharon Fenstermacher took attendance and sold raffle tickets. There were 27 members and two guests present.
At 12:45 Dottie Blowers made a motion to adjourn and Jeannine Schwartz second it all in favor meeting adjourned.
Maryann Walker and George Van Allen won the raffle. The refreshments were served by Griffin, Janice McLaughlin, Powell, Paterson and Barbara McFee made the birthday cake. Bingo was played following the meeting.
Task force for seniors events set
NORTHVILLE — The Sacandaga Task Force for Senior Living has a program each week at the Red Rooster Cafe (Pink Chicken), Corner of Bridge and Main streets.
On Thursday, the Red Rooster Cafe will host David Brooks, the education director at Schoharie Crossing, who will discuss “The History of the Erie Canal.” Becky White of the Fulton County Office for the Aging will also be on hand from 11:30 a.m. to assist seniors will any issues.
Chair yoga, taught by Ony Antonucci, will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Thursday. The cost of classes is $5 per week or six sessions for $25. Those interested can join in anytime; call (518) 863-2168.
The weekly congregate meal, which is served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will still be available. Those participating can attend the Red Rooster programs without attending the meal or bring a bag lunch.
Those who want the Office for the Aging meal are asked to call OFA at (518) 736-5650 to make lunch reservations. STFSL requests if unable to attend the luncheon, call OFA to cancel the meal. If the OFA meal site is closed, there will be no program at the Red Rooster Cafe that day. OFA also serves meals at the Red Rooster Cafe on Tuesdays. Call OFA for information.

Tribes Hill Iroquois Seniors meeting held
TRIBES HILL — The Tribes Hill Iroquois Seniors had their Aug. 8, meeting at 10 a.m. with a social hour hosted by Katherine Downing, Pat Schwartz and Rose Gargiulo.
Chaplain Barbara Furman, opened the meeting with a prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance followed by a reading entitled “The Best Day.”
Furman introduced the guest speaker, Amanda Bearcroft, the director of Community and Economic Development. She discussed the $10 million downtown revitalization initiative and passed out information on how and where the money is going to be spent.
The roll was taken by Furman, with 26 members plus four guests present.
President Sherry Meyers announced the August birthday, Barbara Lampkin, Aug. 29; and anniversary, Pam and Bill Jasewicz, Aug. 17.
The minutes were read by Barb Minch, secretary, from the July 25, meeting and were approved.
The treasurer’s report was read by Barb Lampkin, treasurer, and will be filed for audit.
Trip: Pat Schwartz announced everything is set for the trip to Foxwood Casino. The bus will leave Tribes Hill at 9 a.m. and return the following day around 7 p.m. Olive Taylor announced the Glen-Mohawk Seniors are planning a trip to Albany to go on the Dutch Apple Cruise Boat on Oct. 9. The boat ride will take 1 1/2 hours then will stop at the Cracker Barrel for lunch.
Meyers announced there will not be a meeting for the next two weeks. The next meeting will be on Aug. 29.
The raffle winners were Judy Shannon and Eleanor Gill.
Lampkin had some funny readings.
The meeing adjourned.
