Book discussion scheduled for Wednesday

FONDA — There will be a book discussion of Destiny of a Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President by Candice Millard for the History Book Club from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Department of History and Archives, Montgomery County Department of History & Archives, Old Courthouse.

The event is free, according to a news release.

The book is an account of James Garfield’s rise from poverty to the American presidency, and the dramatic history of his assassination and legacy.

The book also brings to life Garfield’s successor, Vice President Chester A. Arthur, who graduated from Schenectady’s Union College in 1848. Arthur would become his own man upon the death of Garfield even though there were many who doubted his abilities.
