The course identifies the emergency equipment necessary to avert danger on the water or to obtain help. The proper use of the equipment, accessibility and methods of storage are discussed. The techniques for the proper use of the VHF-FM radio for the various stages of distress and what is needed to know before calling for help are discussed. The discussion items include things anyone should know about their vessel in order to get it back to port in the event the skipper is disabled. The scenarios where the first mate has to take command are discussed in depth providing the participants with what they might be faced with and how they might cope in those emergency situations.
