Police:?Contractor failed to do work

JOHNSTOWN – City police said a local contractor was arrested Tuesday for cashing a check from a homeowner without beginning construction.

Robert D. Decker?Jr., 21, of 2434 Route 30A, Fonda, was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony.

Police said Decker, the owner of A+ Contracting, was arrested after a two-month investigation.

Decker received a post-dated check for a deposit of more than $13,000 from a homeowner for work to be completed, police said. Decker deposited the check in his business account prior to the due date on the check, police said, then withdrew the money from his account.

Police said sometime during the transaction, the homeowner made a “stop payment” on the check because Decker did not purchase materials for the job or begin construction as agreed to in the contract.

Decker was arraigned and bail was set.
