Free kayaking lessons set for Sept. 22

FORT HUNTER — Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site will host free introductory kayaking lessons for children at 9 a.m. and noon on Sept. 22, at the Schoharie Crossing boat launch off Route 5S.

The courses are intended for beginner- or novice-level paddlers ages 14 to 17. Audrey Egelston of Down by the River Kayak Rentals will facilitate the two-hour introductory sessions. Space is limited, and preregistration is required for the program.

Parental signatures and liability insurance agreement are required for each participant. Personal floatation devices, paddles and kayaks will be supplied by the site. Participants are asked to dress according to the weather, encouraged to wear sunscreen, and water-appropriate footwear.
