FONDA — The National Shrine of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, 3636 Route 5, will be celebrating its 80th anniversary from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 17, at the River Stone Manor, Glenville. The Shrine will be hosting a gala celebration honoring Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger of Albany, according to a news release.
The Shrine began at the site in 1938, and includes buildings dating back to 1782. The Grassmann Hall was added and many other improvements through the years. During the past 80 years, worshipers come to visit what once was an Indian village, where St. Kateri was baptised and mostly had lived.
