Erie Canal kayaking event to begin in July

Fifteen Miles on the Erie Canal kayaking event to explore the Erie Canalway will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on five Thursdays from July 11 to Aug. 8 with guided and themed discussions.

The program will begin with launch from the St. Johnsville Marina on July 11 with an environmental theme.

On July 18, participants will launch from Riverfront Park in Canajoharie after an art tour of Arkell Museum, 2 Erie Blvd.

Participants will launch from the state Canal Corporation Section Shop in Fonda on July 25, with architecture and transportation as the theme.

On Aug. 1, they will launch from the Schoharie State Historic Site Aqueduct Park off Route 5S, with a history theme.

The final leg, on Aug. 8, will be a launch and return at Down by the River Kayak Rentals at the Port Jackson Boat Launch in South Amsterdam, with an industry, transportation and environment theme.

Ten rentals are available from Down by the River, but otherwise participants should bring their own kayaks.
