Veterans services seeking volunteers

JOHNSTOWN — The Fulton County Veterans Service Agency is seeking volunteer drivers for a van the Fulton County Disabled American Veterans have secured to give veterans a ride to and from the VA Medical center in Albany.

The service currently has a few volunteer drivers who start picking up veterans as early as 6:30 a.m. with the DAV van. The volunteers typically stop at two or three central locations around the county and bring riders to the medical center for morning appointments.

Volunteers do not have to be veterans, but must take a physical exam, get screened for tuberculosis, and go through a simple background check and orientation program.

Veterans who need rides must schedule appointments from 8:30 to 11 a.m. so the van can leave from Albany no later than noon. Riders must also be able to walk because the van does not have a wheelchair lift.
