GLOVERSVILLE — The Foothills Chapter of the Adirondack Mountain Club will meet at 7 p.m. on Oct. 9, at the Gloversville Senior Center, 53 Church St., according to a news release.
There will be a one hour speaker, social time and then a meeting. The public is encouraged to attend the meetings and to join members on the hike, paddle, bike events. The club is looking for new members and encourages everyone to come and ask us about the trails and opportunities right here in this area.
The speakers will be Jody Dixon and Mike Feldman from Benson, who participate in the Adirondack Trail Ride (TATR). TATR is a solo, 600-mile self-supported mountain bike race over some rugged terrain circumnavigating the Adirondack Park. Come see the bikes they use, the gear they take and the route they travel.
TATR is a solo self-supported backpacking adventure race through the Adirondack Mountains. The riders depart and finish from Northville. They journey from the southern foothills to the rugged interior, and then on to the north and Champlain Valley. It is a loop through eastern wilderness on trail, pavement and dirt roads. The trails are rugged, rocky and laced with roots. Some are sublimely rideable while others force participants to slog across creek, bushwhack, route find and hike-a-bike (10 days suggested). The length is 575 plus miles and the vertical is 51,650 feet.
The racers left Waterfront Park, Northville at 8 a.m. Sept. 13, in TATR’s 5th Grand Depart and will share this year’s stories with the ADK Foothills Chapter at the meeting; plan to attend.
