FORT PLAIN —Tackle a giant obstacle course and create sidewalk art in beautiful Haslett Park on Saturday, Sept. 28, as the Fort Plain Free Library, the Mohawk Valley Collective, Delnero Furniture, the Valley Alliance Church Youth Group, Go Green, Stewart’s Shops, and The Sportsman’s Den and D&D Pet Supply team up for a free family fun day.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., area children and their families will be challenged to work their way through park-wide obstacle courses created especially for the event by local businesses and organizations. Attractions include a bow and arrow balloon wall, a barrel crawl, a cup and balloon race, cooperative boardwalk, a ninja string crawl, a pool noodle “javelin” throw, a balance beam, brain quest station, a marble labyrinth, and a big hammer and nail challenge.
Additionally, an inflatable, construction-themed bounce house, hosted by the MVC, will be set up for kids’ entertainment. Food — including ice cream from Stewart’s, hot dogs, chips, and drinks — will be available throughout the day. The library also will host a sidewalk chalk art festival, with paintings created along the perimeter of the park.
All food and activities are free.
MVC Treasurer Tanya Towne said the Mohawk Valley Collective received a grant that made it possible to provide the bounce house and food items free of charge.
“We normally do the River through Time event each August,” Towne said. “We thought it was a good idea to combine the events and collaborate with the library” — making use of the nonprofit’s resources for the benefit of children in the community.
“It’s ‘Community Buildings… Building Community,’” she said.
Event coordinator and library Director Whitney Hubbard said, “This event is an extension of our intergenerational 2019 Summer Reading Program and its focus on literacy, community involvement, and youth development. The library is a resource for all area residents; our children’s programming is just one aspect of what we have to offer.”
She continued, “We are looking forward to this free, family-oriented event and are excited by the many organizations that have worked collaboratively to make it a reality.”
