Hospital expansion set to start this year

AMSTERDAM – St. Mary’s Healthcare plans to break ground later this year on a roughly $20 million building project at its Memorial Campus for a cancer medicine center and other services.

The hospital expects to break ground in the latter part of the year on the Route 30 side of the campus, said spokeswoman Jerri Cortese.

The project recently received a boost – $307,000 from state economic development funds.

The new Outpatient Health Center Pavilion, which will create about 20 new jobs, will contain a new Cancer Medicine Center, a breast health center, a medical imaging center, laboratory services, and eventually the Urgent Care facility, Cortese said.

“[This] will lead to the expansion of patient-centered health care services and increasing accessibility to quality health care close to home,” Cortese said in a news release.

Cortese said the project will be done in phases. The first phase, which includes construction of the pavilion, may be completed in 2015.

The project will include at least two phases, Cortese said. No final completion date has been set.

Cortese said the hospital will search for more funding from private donors and through a capital campaign.

The number of project phases may depend on funding, she said.

“We can get all the way through phase one with available funds,” she said.

Phase one will include the construction of the pavilion. The building initially will house the Cancer Medicine Center, a comprehensive outpatient medical imaging center and laboratory services. The hospital currently offers these services, but they will be expanded, Cortese said.

Phase two will involve moving the St. Mary’s Memorial Health Center and the Urgent Care facility into the pavilion.

Cortese said a plan would be developed on what to do with the open spaces left in the existing facility after the programs move to the new building.

The hospital is a member of Ascension Health, a Catholic health organization.
