CLIFTON PARK – A former Johnstown athlete was among the passengers of a bus carrying lacrosse players that was hit by a sports car Tuesday on the Northway, resulting in the death of a person in the car.
Kevin Hunt, a 2008 Johnstown High School graduate and an assistant coach of the Saint Michael’s lacrosse team, was uninjured in the crash, said his mother, Lou Ann Pioli of Johnstown.
The bus carrying the college lacrosse players from Vermont was hit by a sports car that spun out of control on the wet highway, sending the bus toppling onto its side, police said.
The victim was a 64-year-old female passenger in the red Porsche that hit the bus, authorities said. The 65-year-old man who had been driving was in critical condition. Four players on the bus were treated for minor injuries.
The crash happened shortly before noon. Players stood alongside the highway after the crash and were taken on a school bus to a nearby firehouse.
The bus was carrying 34 players, three coaches and a driver from Saint Michael’s College, a small Catholic liberal arts school in Colchester, Vt., to a game in Westchester County, just north of New York City, state police Lt. Greg Thomas said. The bus landed on its side off the road.
“I’m still shaking,” Pioli said. “I was so relieved when he called to say he was OK.”
She said her son said he was in the front seat and the accident was “horrifying.”
Hunt could not be reached for comment. He joined the Saint Michael’s men’s lacrosse coaching staff as an assistant coach for this season. He previously attended college at Saint Michael’s, where he was a two-year lacrosse team captain.
