Man found on road dies

JOHNSTOWN – A Vermont man found unconscious along Route 30A on Monday died after being taken to Nathan Littauer Hospital, police said Tuesday.

“[The death] doesn’t appear to be suspicious at this point,” police Chief Mark Gifford said Tuesday.

He said a city police officer was driving on Route 30A, near Key Bank, when he encountered an unconscious man by the road about 12:30 p.m. Monday.

Gifford said the man was rushed by ambulance to Nathan Littauer Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gifford said a check of identification of the man indicated he was from Vermont.

He wouldn’t release the man’s name Tuesday because the next of kin hadn’t been notified yet.

The chief said an autopsy on the man was scheduled to be conducted Tuesday afternoon at the hospital.

Gifford couldn’t be reached this morning to provide details about the autopsy.
