Mayfield band gets gold

ONEIDA – The Mayfield High School Jazz Band received a gold rating for its performance March 8 at the 26th annual Oneida High School Jazz Festival, a news release said.

Six Mayfield musicians were selected as members of the honorary Class B All-Star Band. That group includes: Ryan Bumpus, first trumpet; Lucas Mormando, second trumpet; Stephen Grubb, second trombone; Thomas Steele, second tenor sax; Tom McClellan, guitar; and John Brower, drums.

The other schools in Class B were Westmoreland, Sauquoit Valley and Sidney, the release said.

The Mayfield band performed “Cool” from “West Side Story,” “A Child is Born” by Thad Jones and “Green Onions” by Booker T. and the MG’s.

The Mayfield Jazz Band is directed by Noel Wing.

The gold rating is the highest rating awarded at the festival, and the band was given a plaque in recognition of this achievement, the release said.

A band must earn at least 178 points out of 200 to earn a gold rating. Mayfield received 192 points.
