Red Cross aids six after fire

ST. JOHNSVILLE – Six people were given aid by the American Red Cross after a fire Sunday on New Street in the village.

According to a news release from the Red Cross, financial assistance for food and clothing were given to two adults and four children after the fire.

According to Canajoharie Volunteer Fire Chief Frank Nestle, departments from Canajoharie, St. Johnsville and Fort Plain responded to the fire.

Fort Plain Volunteer Fire Chief Brian Muehleck said the fire started at the site of a renovation or reconstruction of a vacant home. He did not know the cause.

“The house was certainly not a total loss,” Muehleck said.

Muehleck said the fire damaged the front corner of the house before setting fire to an occupied home next door, burning the side of that house and the eaves.

Officials from the St. Johnsville Volunteer Fire Department did not return calls seeking comment.
