Teens sentenced to prison for slayings

FONDA – Two teenagers who killed two other boys were sentenced to prison today in Montgomery County Court.

Matthew Phelps, 16, of Snooks Corners Road, town of Florida, was sentenced to 15 years to life, and Anthony Brasmeister, 17, of Belfance Road, Amsterdam, was sentenced to 25 years to life.

They were sentenced for their roles in the slayings of Amsterdam residents Jonathan DeJesus, 13, and Paul Damphier, 16, last July.

Phelps and Brasmeister had pleaded guilty in April to second-degree murder.

Police arrested Phelps and Brasmeister a week after the murders.

The victims were found in a field off Snooks Corners Road in the town of Florida. DeJesus and Damphier were shot in the chest, police said.

The victims and the suspects were acquaintances of each other, authorities said.

Nicole Damphier, sister of Paul Damphier, said of Brasmeister during today’s sentencing, “My brother trusted him and he never saw it coming.”

She also said, “People tell me how it would get better, but time will not heal my wounds.”

More on this story will appear in Friday’s print and online editions.
