AMSTERDAM – City police are asking people to provide them with information regarding an emaciated puppy found on Union Street on Sunday.
Police said the female lab/beagle mix, which is about 8 months old, was seen Sunday on Union Street. No owner of the dog could be located, police said.
The animal appeared to be abandoned, police said, so it was taken to the Montgomery County SPCA. The animal was in need of emergency care, police said, so it was transported to Country Valley Veterinary Clinic on Route 30.
The animal was suffering from dangerously low sodium levels, police said, which could be the result of near drowning.
“The puppy only weighed 24 pounds and should weigh closer to 40-45 pounds,” police Detective Lt. Kurt J. Conroy said in a news release.
The tan puppy, named Dolce, is suffering from tremors and is receiving constant care from the veterinary staff until her condition improves, police said.
Anyone with information about the abused animal can contact the police.
Police said people can make a donation to the SPCA to cover the medical bills for the dog at the Country Valley Veterinary Clinic.
