Man injured by tire at Fonda Speedway

FONDA – A former Fonda Speedway driver was left paralyzed from the neck down after an accident Saturday, a relative said.

David Buanno, a member of the Hall of Fame at the speedway, was struck by a tire while in the pit area Saturday during a race.

Buanno’s cousin, Mike Buanno, said a tire came loose during the four-cylinder feature and struck David Buanno.

After coming off the car, the tire traveled along the backstretch, leaving the speedway at the pit entrance in the third turn, where it hit a jersey barrier before bounding into the pit area.

David Buanno was airlifted to Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Peter Buanno, David’s brother, said his brother is conscious but on life support.

“It’s just amazing, his mind is right there,” Peter said.

Peter said his brother will have surgery to repair to his spinal column.

David Buanno recorded three wins in the modified division at Fonda Speedway during his racing career, the last coming on Oct. 5, 1974.
