MAYFIELD – Authorities have identified the Broadalbin man killed early Sunday after being ejected from a car that crashed into a utility pole, but they still do not know who was driving.

The car, a 2009 Mercedes, was traveling westbound on County Highway 155 near Route 30 around 2 a.m. when the driver failed to make a turn at a curve. The car crashed into the pole before landing on its side on a lawn adjacent to the roadway, law-enforcement sources said.

Justin DePaula, 34, of Broadalbin, and Melissa Vincent, 38, of Broadalbin, were ejected from the vehicle, state police said. DePaula was declared dead at the scene. Vincent was in serious condition at Albany Medical Center.

State Police Investigator Brian Schweigardt said today officials have not yet determined who was driving the car or whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is asked to call state police at 853-4708.

The accident forced the closure of about a mile of County Highway 155, between Second Avenue in Broadalbin and Route 30 in Mayfield.

The accident remains under investigation by the state police accident reconstruction team.
