Johnstown works on replacing bridge

JOHNSTOWN – The city is replacing the North East Avenue bridge and the in-house work may be completed soon, City Engineer Christopher Vose said recently.

“We’re in the process of replacing that,” Vose said. “We’re hoping to be done in the next couple weeks.”

The city has been proactive in many bridge projects in recent years, such as the massive projects on the North Market Street and North Perry Street bridges. While those projects required outside contractors and millions of dollars, Vose said the North East Avenue bridge project is being done in-house by city Department of Public Works crews.

Crews could be seen Friday working on the North East Avenue bridge, with the road closed to public traffic.

Vose said the North East Avenue bridge is more of a culvert over Hale Creek rather than a bridge. He said the replacement will be with an aluminized arch structure.

The city has already received previous state Consolidated Funding Application money to help replace the bridge.

Fulton County Soil & Water Conservation District Manager John Persch has also assisted with the project, Vose said.

Another bridge project the city is working on is the currently-closed Miller Street Bridge. Vose said the city is seeking $100,000 in state funding for future work at the bridge, whose steel is rotting. The city has also been working with the Fulton County Soil & Water Conservation District in recent months on what to do with that bridge, which goes over the Cayadutta Creek.

According to an internal city report made public in the summer of 2014, the state feels one of the most deficient bridges in the city is the 1930-era Miller Street bridge. The has been closed for several years. The report said it may cost the city about $500,000 to replace that bridge.

Vose said previously the city is currently considering several options with the Miller Street Bridge, including replacement, some rehabilitation and installing a partial arch pipe.
