Caroga board eyes infrastructure work at campground

CAROGA – The Town Board recently discussed the infrastructure updates taking place at Caroga Lake Campground.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced that sites 87 through 129 at the campground on Route 29A will be closed to upgrade the infrastructure. The remaining 110 campsites will be open.

The DEC discovered the wastewater system needed to be repaired while preparing for the season.

“The thing we really need to look at is they may be adding other enhancements,” town Supervisor Robert Sullivan said.

He said other enhancements could benefit the campground and town in the long run.

“It’s nice to see [the DEC] put some money in it,” he said.

Town Board Member Beth Morris said Rick Lair from the Campers Corner Store, located across the street, was concerned about business.

“[The DEC] are saying it should only be a few weeks, so let’s hope so,” Morris said.

The Caroga Lake Campground has a beach, and canoe, rowboat and kayak rentals. There also are several hiking trails nearby.

Friday will be the opening day for the grounds. The camping season ends Sept. 5.
