Gloversville Police investigate suspicious package, evacuate South Main Street

GLOVERSVILLE City police were investigating a suspicious package that was left outside near the Unemployment Offices and Career Center, according to city police.

Chief Marc Porter said this morning that officers were alerted to a zippered, vinyl bag that had been left outside 199 South Main St. Porter said this afternoon that the bag contained no incendiary materials, and appeared to contain garbage. After determining there was no evidence of who may have left the bag, police discarded it, according to a news release.

Porter said witnesses told them the soft-sided bag had been there since the weekend.

Porter said as a precaution, the New York State Police Bomb Disposal Unit was called in. He said he wanted to make sure the bag was inspected before it was opened.

“It just didn’t look right to us,” Porter said.

South Main Street was closed off from East Pine Street to Broad Street for a time this morning. Officers evacuated the building, as well as neighboring businesses and homes.

The Leader-Herald will have more information in Thursday’s print and web editions.
