JOHNSTOWN — The Fulton-Montgomery Community College Board of Trustees has approved a new course fee that will allow students access to an online textbook system.
During Thursday’s meeting, the board approved the plan that is a part of the college’s efforts to lower the costs of course materials such as textbooks to help students stay in school.
According to the resolution, the program is offered through the State University of New York’s Open Educational Resources program and the Open SUNY Textbook Services initiative.
The program would work by allowing students access to digital and printable files through a management system called Blackboard.
“The print versions are available at a substantial discount over traditional publisher-sold textbooks,” The resolution states.
Students who wish to do so can still purchase textbooks through the college store.
The fee is $10 per course registration.
College President Dustin Swanger said the college has been looking at ways to lower the cost of buying college textbooks.
Swanger said not every course will have access to materials on the system.
∫ The college will be hosting a TEDX event on Jan. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. in Raiders Cove at the college. Tickets are available on Eventbrite.com.
Swanger said only 100 people will be allowed into the event per TED.
“They are very protective of the event,” Swanger said. “I think it’s going to be a good event.”
∫ The college will be able to do some work on the campus’ large lounge.
Both Fulton County Board of Supervisors and the Montgomery County Legislature have approved for the college to use the remaining balance on the College Student Union renovation project to be put toward other improvements.
The college has created a new campus bookstore on the ground level of the student union and created new spaces for students through the renovation project.
The college will paint the lounge, install new lighting and make adjustments to deal with sound issues.
Swanger said that during presentations, it can be hard to hear what speakers are saying in the room.
The renovations will begin shortly.
