JOHNSTOWN — Fulton-Montgomery Community College will host the second annual Pantene Great Lenths event on Tuesday from 11a.m. to 2 p.m.
According to FMCC, Pantene Beautiful Lengths has collected more than 600,000 ponytails and provided the funds to create more than 34,000 free real-hair wigs, which are distributed through select American Cancer Society wig banks across the country.
This event is open to the community and appointments for ponytail donations are highly encouraged. Participants need to have 8 inches of unbleached hair for donation.
According to Pantene, hair should also be no more than 5 percent gray. Participants can straighten wavy or curly hair prior to the event where it will be measured.
According to a news release, the hair needs to be unbleached and 95 percent non-gray because it takes at least eight to 15 ponytails to make a Pantene Beautiful Lengths wig, and each one comes from a different person with a different shade of hair.
“For a realistic-looking wig that has consistent color, all these ponytails must be processed and then dyed the same shade. It is critical for each ponytail to absorb dyes at the same rate in order to create a wig that is one, natural-looking color,” Pantene stated in the release. “Gray hair and some chemically treated or permanently colored hair does not absorb dye at the same rate as other types of hair. It is much harder to color and, once colored, fades more quickly.”
Pantene suggests donors use a conditioner, leave in conditioner, and no teasing hair prior to making the cut.
To donate, please contact Christie Crawford at (518)-736-3622, Ext. 8163, for an appointment.
Haircuts and feather extensions (clip-ins) are also provided for a $10 minimum donation and 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Pantene Great Lengths campaign.
