CANAJOHARIE — Voting for Canajoharie School District’s bus proposition will be held next Tuesday. Polls will be open for qualified voters from noon to 9 p.m. at the Canajoharie High School.
According to a press release, if approved, the proposition will allow the district to lease three 66-passenger school busses for five years.
The bus lease will not have an impact on the local tax levy, as it will be paid for out of the district’s Bus Replacement Reserve Fund. The cost of the lease is $17,500 for each bus, for an annual total cost of $52,500.
“The district’s multi-year leasing plan keeps our fleet up to date and helps ensure the safety of our students,” said Superintendent Deborah Grimshaw said in the press release.
Grimshaw told the Leader-Herald Monday that they do not own the buses and State Transportation Aid to pay for the lease for the busses.
“It doesn’t affect the tax levy because of the state aid,” Grimshaw said.
She said the buses then get replaced every five years.
“None of the buses are over five years old, they are the safest technology at the time,” Grimshaw said.
All voters must be 18-years or older, U.S. citizens and residents of the district for at least 30 days prior to voting. Advanced registration is not required. Voters may be asked to show proof of residency such as a valid I.D. that lists an address.
Voters can get absentee ballots by submitting an application to the district clerk. Applications for absentee ballots must be received by the district clerk at least seven days prior to the vote so the ballot can be mailed to the voter. Absentee ballots must be received to the district clerk no later than 5 p.m. next Tuesday. To request an application for an absentee ballot, voters can call (518) 673-6302.
