Man escapes courtroom after tussle

MOHAWK — A 29-year-old Fonda man appearing before Town Court Judge Curt Woodcock on a variety of charges, including third-degree assault and obstruction of breathing, realized he was about to be arrested and escaped from the court room after a jostling with a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy.

Shawn Arnold of 60 E. Main St., Fonda arrived at the court around 5:28 p.m. Tuesday with his lawyer to answer charges on third-degree assault, obstruction of breathing, obstruction of governmental administration, endangering the welfare of a child, second-degree harassment and multiple vehicle and traffic infractions.

During the hearing, Arnold realized he was about to remanded to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility when he decided to leave the courtroom.

According to a news release, the attending deputy confronted Arnold, who became “combative and fought with the deputy eventually shedding his shirt to get away from the deputy.”

An all-points bulletin was issued for Arnold, as well as a warrant for his arrest on the original charges.

Shortly after the warrant was issued, Arnold was located with the help of K9 teams from the Amsterdam Police Department.

Arnold continued to fight with the arresting deputies, refusing to be handcuffed.

He was returned to Town Court where he was remanded to the correctional facility on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bail bond.

According to the release, “Charges stemming from [the] incident are pending after review of the facts.”
