MCSD names interim superintendent

MAYFIELD — Mayfield Central School District named Kathy Dougherty as the district’s interim superintendent for the remainder of the school year.

Dougherty, who is also president of the Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education, began her interim position on Monday.

“It went really well,” Dougherty said. “Every district has wonderful times and some challenging times. Everyone was very gracious and welcoming.”

Dougherty said she decided to take the interim superintendent position because she was approached by a couple of people, who she said she respects, one being Ernie Clapper, the president of MCSD BOE.

She said the district was in need of a interim superintendent and she was superintendent of Northville Central School District from 2007 to 2012, and seems like it would be a good match.

“Sometimes it can be challenging to find an interim superintendent,” Dougherty said.

Dougherty will serve as interim superintendent until the permanent superintendent is designated. She said that person would begin the position on July 1. A search for a permanent superintendent has begun and will be discussed at the district’s Board of Education meeting on Nov. 20.

Dougherty said her position as interim superintendent will not affect her position as president Johnstown’s BOE.

She said there may be some scheduling conflicts, though.

“I understand the responsibilities of school board president,” Dougherty said. “They are different types of responsibilities.”

Dougherty said her goal is to make sure the permanent superintendent’s transition is as easy as possible, so he or she can “hit the ground running.”

“My goal is to make sure to have everything in the best possible order by the time I leave,” she said.

“I look forward to having interaction with the students, that’s why I became an educator,” Dougherty said. “I look forward to working with the staff. I hope I can do my best to the community and to the school district because this is what they deserve,” Dougherty said.
