Two teens steal car, crash

CANAJOHARIE — Two juveniles younger than 15 were arrested on Thursday following a short pursuit with state police.

The two males were charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a class E felony.

According to a press release, an erratic vehicle was seen on I-90 in the area of the village.

“Police located the vehicle, attempted to stop it, but they sped off,” Troop T Public Information Officer Michael Cassella said.

A brief pursuit was initiated and after a short distance, the car chase ended when the teens crashed the vehicle.

Cassella said the pursuit lasted approximately 10 minutes and the distance was approximately four miles. He said the property damage was damage done to the vehicle and the turf.

“Even if they don’t hit a structure, there is turf damage,” Cassella said.

The driver and passenger were taken into custody without further incident. Both males were transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation. After being released from the hospital, they were transported to the state police barracks in Fonda and processed and subsequently charged with the fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.

Cassella said police are unsure why the juveniles stole the vehicle. The vehicle was not stolen from a family member.

Both teens were issued appearance tickets for Montgomery County Family Court and released to their parents. The family court date is scheduled for Monday at 9 a.m.

No injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved. According to the press release additional charges are possible.
