ALBANY — A public Veterans Day observance will be held Monday at 9 a.m. on the USS Slater, a national historic landmark and the only destroyer escort afloat in America.

The ship will be open to the public for guided tours following the observance until 4 p.m. Admission will be charged.

The Slater will remain open through Nov. 25 this year. The ship will be closed Thanksgiving Day. Regular public hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

After Thanksgiving weekend, the ship will close for the winter, reopening in April 2019.

USS Slater is located on the Hudson River downtown just south of the Dunn Memorial Bridge. Admission is $9 for adults and $7 for children.

During World War II, 563 destroyer escorts battled Nazi U-Boats on the North Atlantic protecting convoys of men and supplies. In the Pacific, they stood first in line to defend naval task forces from Kamikaze attacks. Many DEs continued serving the United States throughout the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Others were given to Allied nations after World War II and served gallantly in foreign navies. USS Slater represents all of these destroyer escorts in service throughout the 20th century.
