Vehicle crash claims driver

FLORIDA — A one-car motor vehicle accident that occurred Tuesday morning caused the death of an Amsterdam resident.

At approximately 7:32 a.m., a Montgomery County sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the area of Fort Hunter near Route 5S in the town of Florida discovered a vehicle off the road that appeared to have been involved in an accident.

The sheriff’s deputy located one male occupant in the vehicle who was unresponsive and requested additional emergency services.

The driver in the crash was identified as 61-year-old James A. Wilkinson.

Wilkinson suffered fatal injuries during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene by Assistant Coroner Christopher Hanley.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. A portion of Fort Hunter Road was closed during the investigation, but has since re-opened.

Montgomery County Sheriff Jeff Smith said the cause of the accident is still being investigated.

“Unfortunately, there is no further information I can give at this time,” Smith said.

Assisting with the crash was Tribes Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Fort Hunter Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County Emergency Services director, Greater Amsterdam Volunteer Ambulance Corps. and additional members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
