Elderly man’s death leads to investigation

NORTHVILLE — The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of an 87-year-old man who was found outside his home Tuesday morning.

According to a news release, at approximately 8:30 a.m., the Fulton County Sheriff’s Communications Center received a 911 call for a deceased male on Reed Street in the village of Northville.

Fulton County Sheriff Richard Giardino said he was found by a family member outside his residence near the entry door.

The sheriff’s office requested assistance from the state police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and state police Evidence Unit due to unusual circumstances found at the scene.

Giardino said he can’t say what those circumstances were because the investigation is ongoing and “out of respect of the family.”

Fulton County Coroner Margaret Luck and Northampton Ambulance Service also assisted at the scene.

An autopsy is being conducted today. Giardino said he can’t say whether the cause of the man’s death was a criminal act or a medical related, but as the investigation continues, it’s looking “more and more as a medical event.”

He said however, “We are treating it as a serious case until we can exclude it as a criminal act.”

Once the autopsy has been completed more information will be released.

The sheriff’s office assures there is no concern for the safety of others in the community at this time.
