Art group to host art walk

GLOVERSVILLE — The Glove Cities Arts Alliance, or GCAA, is calling all area artists. GCAA will be hosting an artwalk that they feel will be the perfect place to showcase locally known artists, including talent that hasn’t necessarily had a platform. The 2021 Art Walk exhibition will feature works from Fulton and Montgomery counties, along with neighboring communities. At least 30 businesses in the downtown Gloversville area will be participating.

GCAA is a new Arts Council in Gloversville with a goal of promoting health and vitality of the arts in local communities, working to make the arts easily accessible. The Art Walk planned for June 5 will have business store fronts displaying works by local artists. The event will also include local musicians, crafts and activities for children, and the Wine and Food Festival.

Janelle Krause of the GCAA said the idea for the artwalk came from Robert Tomlinson, a pioneer in the arts community.

“Tomlinson has been a part of non-profit organizations in the Catskills area, where he is from, and has seen the wonderfully good things arts events like this can do for a community. Those of us who are a part of the arts council all want to help improve Gloversville through the arts. We saw this as a way to showcase local talent, add beauty to the downtown area through the ‘brightening’ of unused and neglected windows, and bring more people into the downtown area,” said Krause.

Several members of the arts council are practicing artists and Krause said while they had not heard from artists in the area that this is something they were looking for, they believe the walk give a chance for artists to show off their talents.

“It really is a wonderful opportunity to bring to the community, “ said Krause.

Some of the 30 participating businesses include places like Dunday’s Clothier, Panache, True Value, Happy Mug, Liberty Tax, Helper’s Store, Peck’s Flowers, and New York Lunch. Krause said they are aiming to have the artwork on display until Aug. 5, allowing for the artwork to be on display during the summer months when downtown typically sees more foot traffic.

“We figured this would give artists ample time to have their work on display throughout the summer tourism season. During the opening day of the art walk people will have the opportunity to make donations to GCAA or to purchase some merchandise. Donations are accepted at all times and greatly appreciated. We would like to put on more special events like this in the future,” said Krause.

Art in all media, from any artist living in Fulton and Montgomery counties, along with surrounding areas, within the region is welcome. All artwork will be selected by a curatorial committee from GCAA’s board. There is no submission fee. Artists submissions should include up to five images, and should contain a brief description. Artists should also include a brief bio and contact information. All submissions must be original works of the exhibiting artist and all entries must be of original design and personal execution. Selection notification and exhibition contracts will be sent by email by May 5. Deadline for submission is April 30. A public opening reception and awards ceremony will be held June 5.
