Area wrestlers ready for Section II tournaments

For the first time in two years, the Fonda-Fultonville/Johnstown wrestling team will compete in the postseason.

After last season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fonda-Fultonville/Johnstown will head to Watervliet High School on Saturday for the Section II Class CC tournament.

Fonda-Fultonville/Johnstown had four wrestlers seeded among the top four in their respective weight classes for the Class CC tourney.

Owen Hicks was seeded first at 145 pounds, Jonathon Cranker second at 160, Logan McCoy was seeded third at 138 and Zenmatsu Myles was seeded fourth at 126.

Hicks won the Class CC title at 126 pounds in 2020, while Myles was second at 120. Cranker was third at 145.

Hicks is 25-1 overall this season, Myles is 16-5, McCoy is 9-8 and Cranker is 3-2.

Joining Fonda-Fultonville/Johnstown in the Class CC field will be host Watervliet/Cohoes, Hudson Falls, Cohoes/Watervliet, Lansingburgh, Glens Falls, Schalmont, Schuylerville/Greenwich, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk, LaSalle and Albany Academy.

Cobleskill-Richmondville won the Class CC title in 2020.

Wrestling is slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Three other area teams also will be in action this weekend.

Amsterdam and Scotia-Glenville are slated to travel to Queensbury High School on Sunday for the Class B tournament. Canajoharie/Fort Plain will compete in the Class D tournament, which will be hosted by Salem/Cambridge at Cambridge High School on Saturday.

The Class A and B tournaments were originally scheduled to be held Friday, but were postponed to Sunday when Friday’s entire area high school schedule was wiped out due to a snowstorm across the Capital Region.

The top six finishers in the Class A and B tourneys qualify for the Section II Division I (large-school) tournament, while the top four finishers in the Class CC, C and D tourneys advance to the Section II Division II (small-school) tournament. Those tournaments will take place simultaneously at Cool Insuring Arena in Glens Falls next Saturday.

CLASS A

After finishing second the Division I dual-meet tourney, Shaker will host the Section II Class A tournament Sunday.

The Blue Bison had three wrestlers claim the top seed in their respective weight classes.

Michael Santore (118 pounds), Donovan Deguire (172) and Ryan Stein (215) were all seeded first for Shaker.

Shenendehowa, which won the 2020 Class A title, has four wrestlers seeded first for this year’s tournament. Greg Green (102), Ayden Robles (126), Vincent Grembocki (132) and Jashon Holmes (138) all earned No. 1 seed for the Plainsmen.

Saratoga Springs is the only other school with more than one wrestler seeded first as Vito Spatafora (152) and Sachiel Chuckrow (160) earned top seeds.

Rounding out the Class A field will be Schenectady, Albany, Colonie, Guilderland, Bethlehem and Columbia.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. on Sunday.

CLASS B

Having won the Section II Division I dual-meet title, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake will look to add another title when it travels to Queensbury for the Class B tournament.

Liam Martin (126 pounds), Gabriel Goss (132), Tyler Rossini (138), Thomas Pawlinga (160) and Danny Casey (189) all earned No. 1 seeds for the Spartans, who won the Class B title in 2020.

Ballston Spa’s Ralph Keeney (102), Connor Gregory (152) and Darrien Insogna (215) all were seeded first, along with Mohonasen’s Clayton O’Connor (110) and Nico Rivera (118).

Queensbury’s Dylan Schell (172) and Niskayuna’s Allan Duavon (285) also earned top seeds.

Renso Montalvo earned the top seed at 145 pounds for Amsterdam, Carlos Montalvo was seeded second at 126 and Ryan Reagan was seeded fourth at 189. The Rams finished sixth at the Class B tourney in 2020.

Renso Montalvo won the 120-pound Class B title in 2020, while Carlos Montalvo was third at 113 pounds.

Scotia-Glenville/Galway’s Calvin Conti was seeded third at 126 pounds.

The Class B field also includes South Glens Falls, Averill Park and CBA.

Wrestling is slated to begin at 9:45 a.m. on Sunday.

 

CLASS C

After winning the Class C title in 2020, Tamarac will finally have the opportunity to defend its title.

The Bengals have four wrestlers seeded first in their respective weight classes.

That group includes D’Vante Ortiz (102). Trevor Bishop (118), Torin Bishop (132) and Austin Fitzpatrick (145).

Granville/Fort Ann and Catskill each have two wrestlers seeded first. Jaxon Torres (110) and Nicholas Crum (126) earned top seeds for the Golden Horde, while Daniel Forbes (160) and Stephen Forbes (189) were seeded first for the Cats.

The Class C field includes host Mechanicville/Stillwater, Ichabod Crane, 2020 Class CC champion Cobleskill-Richmondville, Taconic Hills, Coxsackie-Athens, Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George, Greenville and Rensselaer/Loudonville Christian.

Wrestling is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

CLASS D

After claiming the Section II Division II dual meet title, Warrensburg/Bolton is looking to claim the Class D crown on Saturday.

Dylan Winchell (126), Tanner McKenna (132), Dante Corriveau (145) and Tristan Hitchcock (285) all were seeded first in their respective classes for Warrensburg/Bolton, which has won the last five Class D titles.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middleburgh’s Gabe English (102), Liam English (110) and Hunter Parker (160) were seeded first in their weight classes, along with Duanesburg/Schoharie’s Scott Nicolella (118), Jermey Rehberg (152).

Cody Haig (138) and Reed Douglass (172) earned No. 1 seeds for Canajoharie-Fort Plain, while Austin Horender (110) and Alex Smith (118) were seeded third. Haig won the 120-pound Class D title in 2020, while Smith (99) and Douglass (182) placed third. C-FP was sixth in the team standings in 2020.

Host Salem/Cambridge, Cairo-Durham, Hoosick Falls, Corinth, Berlin/New Lebanon, Maple Hill and Whitehall round out the Class D field.
