FORT PLAIN — Montgomery County officials on Monday could identify a man allegedly associated with an explosive found in a Fort Plain late last week, Sheriff Jeffery Smith reported.
The man was slapped with multiple felony charges in Minden Town Court on Saturday, the day after officials found a pipe bomb outside of an Upper Main Street residence. State police bomb squad units out of Albany destroyed the device.
“We just aren’t ready to release all of the details yet, but I think tomorrow we should be,” said Smith.
Smith didn’t specify the bomb’s location.
After Fort Plain police received a call regarding the bomb around 2 p.m, the Upper Main Street area was evacuated and blocked off for about four hours. Schools in the Fort Plain Central School District were notified of the situation out of an “abundance of caution,” Smith said.
“We’ve had these happen before throughout my career, but it’s not something that happens quite regularly,” Smith said about explosives found in Montgomery County.
Working with the county district attorney’s office, authorities executed a search warrant of the suspect’s residence. The suspect was not remanded following his arraignment, but there is no immediate danger to the public, according to Smith.
