ST. JOHNSVILLE – An Amsterdam woman stole more than $88,000 from an older Montgomery County resident for whom she served as power of attorney, New York State Police said Friday.
Cynthia Mecca, 62, of Amsterdam, was charged last week with one count of second-degree grand larceny, a felony.
The investigation began in December as troopers received a complaint that money was missing from an elderly resident’s bank account, police said.
Investigators soon determined that Mecca, acting as the victim’s power of attorney, made multiple unauthorized withdrawals from March 2021 until January 2022. The withdrawals totaled over $88,000, money taken without a justifiable purpose that would benefit the victim, police said.
Mecca turned herself in, was processed and released to appear in St. Johnsville Town Court later.
