AMSTERDAM – An Amsterdam woman has been arrested, accused of shooting someone at Veteran’s Park in Amsterdam Sunday, police said.

The victim, a 38-year-old woman from Amsterdam, was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam by private vehicle. She was alert and speaking with police there, police said.

Charged in the incident was Josefina J. Baret-Araujo, 36, of Amsterdam. She faces one count each of second-degree assault, felony, and second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor.

Officers were called to the Locust Avenue park at about 3:19 p.m. for a report of a shooting that had just happened, police said. Officers arrived about a minute later and took the shooter into custody, police said.

She surrendered to police and officers recovered from her the handgun used in the incident, police said.

Police responded to the hospital and spoke with the victim. The victim was alert and able to give details about the incident, police said. The victim has since been transferred to Albany Medical Center for further treatment for what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The perpetrator and victim were known to each other and had a pre-existing conflict between them, police said.

Amsterdam Police were assisted at the scene by members of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the New York State Police. Amsterdam Police detectives responded and completed a canvass of the area that included interviewing witnesses as well as securing photographs that were taken by visitors to the park at the time of the shooting.

The investigation remained ongoing and more charges against the accused are possible, police said. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Amsterdam Police Department at 518-842-1100 ext. 121.

The Amsterdam Police Department was assisted by the office of the Montgomery County District Attorney Lorraine Diamond.
