Man charged with welfare fraud

JOHNSTOWN — John D. Beddow, 46, of 97 Lincoln St., Gloversville, was charged by Fulton County sheriff’s investigators at 1:45 p.m. Thursday with felony counts of fourth-degree welfare and fourth-degree grand larceny.

Deputies said Beddow allegedly filed a false document with the county Department of Social Services to obtain $1,022 in welfare benefits to which he was not entitled to.

He will appear later in City Court.

Domestic incident leads to charges

MAYFIELD — John F. Steele, 59, of 169 Blanchard Loop Road, was charged by Fulton County sheriff’s deputies at 9:30 p.m. Friday with assault, unlawful imprisonment, driving while intoxicated and failure to keep right.

Deputies said Steele was arrested following a vehicle stop on Bemis Road in the town. It was found he was driving while intoxicated, deputies said. It was also found that during a family offense, Steele forcefully restrained his ex-girlfriend against her will and struck her repeatedly in the face with a closed fist while telling her that he was going to kill her, deputies said.

The victim sustained severe facial swelling and a broken nose, deputies said. She was transported by ambulance to Nathan Littauer Hospital and treated for her injuries, deputies said.

Steele was arraigned in the Town Court and released on unsecured bail, declining to issue a stay-away order of protection as requested by the victim. He will reappear in court later.

Driving with revoked license charged

AMSTERDAM — Harry J. Bugasch, 54, of 12 Elk St., was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office Saturday and charged operating a motor vehicle with a revoked license.

Deputies said Bugasch was seen stopping past the line at a red light on Route 30. The deputy executed a department of motor vehicle check and determined that Bugasch’s license had been revoked for a conviction of driving while intoxicated.

Woman charged with petit larceny

AMSTERDAM — Julie Rockwell, 43, of 3741 Route 29, Johnstown, was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office March 17 and charged with petit larceny.

Deputies said Rockwell was arrested on an active arrest warrant for petit larceny.

Rockwell was arraigned in Town Court and sent to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility on $250 cash bail.

Suspended license, registration charged

AMSTERDAM — Emily D. Mawyin, 31, of 55 Hibbard St., Amsterdam, was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s office and charged with having a suspended drivers license and registration.

Deputies said Mawyin was arrested following a traffic stop during in which it was determined her drivers license and car registration had both been suspended.

Mawyin is set to appear in Town Court on March 30 at 6 p.m.
