Traffic stop leads to drug charges
GLOVERSVILLE —A city man is facing a number of drug charges after city police said he was found in possession of a number of illegal substances.
James A. Dean, 41, of 71 Division St. was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, two counts of fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle by city police on Oct. 31.
Officers said members of the detective division received information pertaining to a male subject alleged to be in possession of a handgun and a quantity of drugs.
During the investigation, detectives began to conduct surveillance on a vehicle which the suspect was reported to be operating.
While conducting surveillance, detectives observed a man place an item into the trunk of a vehicle, and then leave the residence. Detectives observed the operator of the vehicle, and confirmed him to be Dean, the alleged suspect.
Detectives, with the assistance of a patrol supervisor, conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. The traffic stop was the result of previously learned information indicating that Dean had a suspended New York driver’s license.
During the traffic stop, Dean was found to be the only occupant of the vehicle. Dean could not provide the identity of the owner of the vehicle, but did provide an address for them. Detectives made contact with the owner of the vehicle, and they consented to a search.
In the trunk of the vehicle, detectives located an imitation firearm, and a box containing a significant quantity of narcotics. Detectives said they located hydrocodone, generic Valium, Suboxone, marijuana, and crack cocaine, all packaged individually, into specific quantities, for sale.
Dean was arraigned in Gloversville City Court and remanded to Fulton County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash or $20,000 bail bond.
