Gloversville man faces DWI charge

GLOVERSVILLE — Joseph J. Johnson, 23, of 42 S. Main St., was charged by city police with two felonies for aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child in the vehicle and first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a vehicle and two misdemeanors for driving while intoxicated and second degree criminal impersonation on March 1 at 10:55 p.m.

City police conducted a traffic stop after observing Johnson commit a traffic infraction. Johnson was allegedly unable to produce a state license and provided a name and date of birth to the officers. The name Johnson provided was that of a male who held a suspended license.

Johnson was taken into custody based on that information and transported to the station for processing.

During processing it was determined that bail would be set, and Johnson could contact a third party to post bail for him.

While awaiting bail, officers continued the booking process and believed that Johnson was intoxicated.

He was subsequently asked to perform a standardized sobriety test at the station.

During this time, someone arrived at the station to post bail but said they were there to post bail for “Joseph Johnson,” not the name Johnson allegedly gave during the traffic stop.

Police said that further investigation led to Johnson admitting he gave a false name. Police also found Johnson to be intoxicated and at the time of the stop he had a child in the vehicle.

During the investigation police found that Johnson also had an active warrant issued by City Court for failing to pay a fine related to a previous driving while ability impaired charge.

Johnson was held for arraignment.
