Ephratah fire fatality being investigated as ‘suspicious’ by state police

EPHRATAH — State police are investigating a “suspicious” death after an Ephratah woman was found dead in her home following a structure fire on Friday.

Sara E. Stinnett, 74, of 517 Route 67, was identified as the woman who died by state police on Tuesday.

Troopers responded to a the fire at the home as crews from the Ephratah Volunteer Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze on Friday around 3:56 p.m.

The home was believed to be occupied by Stinnett, the owner. She was subsequently found dead inside. New York State Police are investigating the fatal fire.

State police are asking anyone with information or who may have seen smoke in the area at the time of the fire to call 1-800-GIVE-TIP (1-800-448-3847).

Troopers said in a prepared statement that no further information on the ongoing investigation is available at this time and further updates will be released as they become available.

A call to the state police public information officer was not immediately returned on Tuesday.
