Gloversville explosion investigation 4/17/24

ATF investigators are present outside 36 Helwig Street in Gloversville Wednesday, April 17, 2024 after a reported explosion early in the morning that shook the multi-family residence and could be heard throughout the neighborhood.

GLOVERSVILLE — Police officers taped off the residence at 36 Helwig Street in the city of Gloversville Wednesday as multiple agencies including the ATF and FBI investigate two explosions that woke neighbors overnight.

Police said they responded around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday to the area of Helwig Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue for the report of two explosions. Police said they found two separate scenes with evidence of a detonation of “improvised explosive devices.”

The residence is owned by Colin Tyndall, according to the final 2023 assessment roll. Tyndall lists a Schenectady address on the roll documentation.

Helwig Street resident Charles Williams Wednesday recalled two bangs, a small one and then a big one.

"It lit up our bedroom and I come out to see what it was and I didn't see anything at first" Williams said. "then all the cops came swarming around."

Resident Dennis Collins' residence was damaged in the incident. He heard the loud explosion that jarred the building.

He soon discovered damage to his porch railing and front window.

"I don't know what happened, really, I don't know why somebody would do this," Collins said as he worked to sweep up the damage. "Apparently it was a random act."

No one was hurt, said Mayor Vincent DeSantis Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators at the scene of Wednesday morning's explosions in Gloversville.

“There was property damage on both of those properties,” he said.

He also said there is no danger to the public at this time.

DeSantis said he wasn’t able to provide further details as he is awaiting a briefing from the police chief on the investigation.

DeSantis, who lives a couple blocks away, said he was awoken around 1:37 a.m. to two back to back explosions.

“The first thing I thought was it was fireworks,” he said. “You didn’t hear any collapsing or anything like that, it was just a boom. I don’t think it was huge explosions but they did damage to the front porches of those houses.”
