Ernest David White of Delaney Road, Mayfield, N.Y., died peacefully Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home, Gloversville N.Y. In his last month, as was the case during his rich and full life, he was surrounded by his loving family. He was 95.
Ernie was born November 23, 1917, son of David C. and Elsie VanNostrand White of Riceville.
Ernie was a WW II Army veteran and served from 1941-1945 in Hawaii and Saipan in the Pacific. Ernie was employed in the automobile parts business in Gloversville and Johnstown, retiring as parts manager at John C. Miller Lincoln/Mercury/Jeep dealership. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years, he particularly enjoyed listening to music (especially performed by family members) and taking care of his grandchildren from their birth up to their teenage years. Another favorite was gathering with family and friends at the White family beach on Great Sacandaga Lake. Ernie was a life member of VFW Post 8690 in Broadalbin and a member of the Mayfield Presbyterian Church.
Ernie is survived by: his beloved wife of 65 years, Irene J. VanNort; and three children, Shelley (Daniel) Riley of Pennellville, N.Y., David E. (Becky) White of Gloversville, and Darryl E. (Kelly) White of Broadalbin. He is also survived by: his grandchildren, Patrick and Evan Riley, Tara Auler, Jordan, Corey and Jason White, Aaron and Marissa White; and great-grandchildren, Keira, Deanna and Zoe Riley, Lilia White and Katie Auler.
Ernie is also survived by one sister, Medora Venneman of Hollywood, Md.
Ernie was preceded in death by his two brothers, Harold and Donovan White. A celebration of life service will be held in the spring once the new Mayfield Presbyterian Church is completed.
