Mrs. Marion Rose Newnham Bishop passed away Friday, January 25, 2013, at Littauer Nursing Home, Gloversville, after a long illness. She spent 86 of her 90 years in the same house at 1 Yost St., Johnstown, moving from downstairs to upstairs when she married.
She was born in Gloversville on August 27, 1922, the only daughter of Alfred and Irma Bush Newnham. She graduated from Johnstown High School in 1940 and from Mount Holyoke College in 1944.
Marion Rose worked at the Beech Nut Lab in Canajoharie, taught at a one-room school house in Ephratah and Wheelerville School, Caroga Lake. She and Leon operated Newnham’s Tire Shop in Johnstown, having purchased it from her mother after her father’s death. After Leon’s death in 1965, she ran it alone with her five wonderfully dedicated employees until 1972. She then was employed for Fulton County as the Director
of Administrative Services. She retired in 1982, after which she traveled all over the world and worked
on geology.
She was a devoted lifetime member of the United Methodist Church of Johnstown, now Foothills United Methodist Church. She was the first woman trustee of the church, a Sunday School Teacher and officer of the United Methodist Women. Marion Rose was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Leon D. Bishop, and her infant daughter, Linda Ann, in 1958. She is survived by: her daughter, Betsy and her husband Frederick
Miller of Benson, VT; two grandchildren, Emily and her husband Christopher Golding of Chesapeake, VA, and Matthew Miller of Johnstown; her sister-in-law, Evelyn Soodsma of Johnstown; nieces, nephews and cousins. Cremation was at ParkView Crematorium, Schenectady. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family. A celebration of Marion Rose’s life will be held at Foothills United Methodist Church in Gloversville on Tuesday, January 29th. The Reverends Edward Hackett and Richard Sears will preside. There will be a visiting time before the service from 11:00 to 11:30 at the church, followed by the service at 11:30 and a reception will be held at the
church following the service.
