Robert J. Smitka, 69, of the town of Perth, N.Y., passed away unexpectedly on Monday at his home.
Born April 14, 1943, in Amsterdam, New York, he was the son of the late Casper and Bernise Armstrong Smitka. He was a graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School. Robert was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War where he served in Okinawa.
He was employed for the Callanan Industries in Schenectady for a number of years until retiring in 2005. Robert liked to work on his tractors and enjoyed listening to country music. He loved spending time with his family and close friends.
Survivors include his sister, Sandra A. Dominguez of Tolland, Conn.; several nieces and a nephew; very close friends, Paul and Lisa. Robert was predeceased by a brother, Thomas J. Smitka, who passed away in 1978.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, at 2 p.m. at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam, with the Rev. O. Robert DeMartinis officiating at which time military honors will take place. Calling hours will be held on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
