Edith B. Passero, age 81, of Johnstown, passed away on Monday, January 28, 2013, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam. She maintained her health for some years while dealing with multiple effects of diabetes. She passed after a those effects became too critical to manage, and was blessed with being surrounded by her loving family while she was so ill.
Edith was born on March 3, 1931, in Johnstown, daughter of the late Lewis Brownell and Lizabeth Waite Brownell. She resided in Johnstown all of her life. Edith attended Johnstown schools, and was a graduate of Johnstown High School. She was a military wife for some years and traveled extensively during that time. Later on, she became a single parent who raised four daughters.
Edith began her working career at the Family Bargain Center in Johnstown, advancing her way up from clerk to department manager. When the store closed, she gained employment at Beech Nut in Canajoharie, working there many years until her retirement. Edith was a member of the former Johnstown United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the Improved Order of Red Men degree of Pocahontas and member of the Bakery, Confectionery and Tobacco Workers International Union.
Edith enjoyed family. She was very supportive in her daughters’ and grandchildren’s involvement in school activities. She enjoyed the years her daughters were involved with the Trinity Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, and traveled to many shows and competitions across New York state and New England. She enjoyed family gatherings, her grand and great-grand children, her beloved cat and playing bingo. Edith was a lifelong New York Yankees baseball and New York Giants football fan.
She is survived by: three daughters, Marguriette (Gary) Passero Buboltz of Gloversville, Joanne Passero of Johnstown and Lou Anne (Ken, deceased) Passero Ott of Madison, Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren (and another on the way); and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Edith was predeceased by her daughter, Connie Passero, on October 4, 1999. In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by one brother, Howard “Buck” Brownell; and one sister, Eleanor Brownell King.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Edith’s life will be held from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 17, at the Broadalbin American Legion Post No. 337, 19 North Main Street, Broadalbin. A visitation period will follow with a buffet and refreshments for family and friends.
Cremation was at Vale Crematory, Schenectady. Arrangements have been entrusted to the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 East Main Street, Johnstown. Edith’s family deeply appreciates all the competent and loving care, companionship and support extended to Edith and our family by the Wells House, St. Mary’s Hospital and Mountain Valley Hospice. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Wells House Auxiliary, the Wells House Activities Fund or to Mountain Valley Hospice.
