John D. Coons, age 70, of Johnstown, N.Y., passed away peacefully at Ellis Hospital, Schenectady, N.Y. with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on April 24, 1942, the son of the late Stewart and Evelyn Coons of Johnstown, N.Y. On March 14, 1970, John married Emilia Lauritano-Rhodes; they shared a loving and happy marriage. John passed away on their 43rd anniversary. John was the owner of Coons Decorators and Coons Decorating Center on Main Street in Johnstown. He was an asset to his trade as a professional painter and wallpaper hanger. John was a true craftsman and artist as evidenced by the Adirondack furniture and paintings he created.
John enjoyed many years and memories with his friends and family at his Adirondack cabin, Camp Wabagoon in Speculator, N.Y. John’s pride and joy was the time he spent teaching, playing, teasing and loving his seven grandchildren. John was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fly fisherman. He enjoyed his fly fishing excursions to Montana and Alaska.
John is survived by: his wife, Emilia of Johnstown; his children, Jon (Jeanine), Kelly Groginski (Marty) and Kimberly Salation (Christopher); his seven grandchildren; also his siblings, Bill, Gary Cathy, Carol, and Susie. He was predeceased by his siblings, Bob, Chuck, and Marion.
John has shared his case study with the Wilmot Cancer Research Center in Rochester, N.Y. The family would like to thank Dr. Tai and the staff for the loving care and support, and excellent professionalism throughout John’s battle with cancer.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 17, 2013, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Amico Funeral Home, 150 South Main Street, Gloversville, N.Y. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
