Marcia K. Markey of Ojai, Calif., (formerly of Northville, N.Y.), passed away recently after a brief illness. She was 74. She was born in Lynchburg, Va., the daughter of Harold Kotz of Syracuse, N.Y. and Amy Elizabeth Sweet of the Maryland shore.
She attended Randolph Macon Women’s College and was a graduate of North Adams State College. In the mid 1950s, she enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a corporal.
A devoted theosophist, she lived and worked at the Krotona Institute of Theosophy in Ojai, Calif. for over 20 years. There, she managed Krotona’s bookstore. A lover of the outdoors and national parks, she was an avid landscaper and gardener. A world traveler, she also lived abroad for a year in Adjar, India.
Formerly married to Arthur R. Markey, USMC (deceased), she was a devoted mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her three children, Ellen Linza of Aldie, Va., Gretchen Markey of Northville, N.Y., Sean Markey (Judith) of Peacham, Vt.; six grandchildren, Michael, Charlotte, Andrew Linza, Gretta, Keith Marino, Liam Markey; siblings, Barbara Sibley (Colorado), Edward(Linda) Kotz (Oregon) and Liza Deese (Oregon). Courageous, kind and loving, she is greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, on Thursday, March 7, at 1 p.m. with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Krotona School of Theospohy, Krotona Hill, Ojai, CA 93020, or any national park.
