Mrs. Helena C. Campanile, age 102, of Gloversville, N.Y., passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013, at the Nathan Littauer Nursing Home of natural causes.
She was born July 31, 1910, in Johnstown, N.Y., the daughter of the late Peter Zayicek and Phyllis Mraz-Zayicek. A 1928 graduate of Johnstown High School, she along with her sisters owned and operated the former Carene’s, a women’s apparel shop in Gloversville, retiring in the late 1970s. Mrs. Campanile was very community minded and church orientated. She was a devoted member of the Church of the Holy Spirit of Gloversville, where she served in many capacities. She was chairwoman of the Women’s Holy Name Society and chairwoman of the Catholic Daughters and chaired various church fundraisers.
She was also, a member of the Knights of Columbus women’s auxiliary. Helena was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas Campanile Sr., whose demise occurred on January 1, 1990. She is survived by her son, Thomas Campanile Jr. and his wife, Vivian, who Helena loved dearly and treated as her daughter; and her grandchildren, Kim Campanile-Herba of Florida, Carrie Campanile-Russell of Florida, Stacy Campanile of Florida, and Jessica Campanile-List of California; three great-grandchildren, Corbin Herba, of Florida, Sydney and Ava Russell of Florida; one daughter, Phyllis M. Nicolella; one sister, Florence Carrese of Seabrook Island, S.C.; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Zayicek and Ruth Campanile; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the John W. Finocan Funeral Home Inc., 13 Prospect Ave., Gloversville.
