Salvatore Angelo Guarnieri III, 64, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2013, after being stricken at home.
Sam was born on July 5, 1949, in Gloversville, N.Y., a son of the late Sam and Margaret Guarnieri. He was a graduate of Gloversville High School, SUNY Albany, where he earned a degree in physics, and SUNY Oneonta, where he earned his master’s degree.
Sam spent his entire working career as an electrical engineer for Northrop Grumman, an aerospace and defense technology company in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a very dedicated and loyal employee there for almost 40 years, and he recently retired.
On July 20, 1974, Sam married his wife, the former Cynthia Leader from Auburn, N.Y. They were married at the former St. Aloysius Church in Auburn, N.Y., and eventually settled in Laurel, Maryland. In Laurel they raised a son, Salvatore IV “Sammy,” and a daughter, Giovanna.
Sam really loved tennis, going to the beach and music. He especially enjoyed going to concerts. The many shows he attended includes the famous Woodstock concert in 1969 and the legendary Summer Jam at Watkins Glen in 1973.
Most importantly, though, Sam loved and lived for his family. He really enjoyed going to all of Giovanna’s tennis and field hockey games, and he was always ready to travel and visit Sammy no matter what city he was living in. He was a great father. He would do anything for his kids, and he knew precisely the perfect time to instill wisdom and advise both as a parent, and as a friend, his transitioning was flawless. He will always be deeply missed, loved and cherished by all.
Sam is survived by Cynthia, his wife of 39 years; one son, Salvatore IV of New York City, N.Y.; one daughter, Giovanna of Laurel, Maryland; four sisters, Kathyleen Guarnier of Niskayuna, N.Y., Cecelia Malagisi (Andrew), Maria Hallenbeck-Brown (Brian) and Rita Guarnier, all of Gloversville, N.Y.
Additional survivors include several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, many in-laws, cherished friends and their family dog, Duke.
Sam was of the Catholic faith. A memorial service was held on August 20, 2013, in Laurel, Maryland. Online condolences can be left at donaldsonfuneralhome.com.
